We recommend only flushing toilet paper and human waste down your toilet. You should never flush the following items:
Diapers
Feminine hygiene products (tampons, applicators, pads)
Condoms
Wipes (even if the package says they are flushable or biodegradable)
Cigarette butts
Household hazardous waste (like paints and solvents, motor oil, household cleaners, etc.)
The contents of meal prep ice bags
Medication or needles
Cotton swabs, Kleenex, and paper towels
Food
When it comes to your sink drains and laundry it is best to avoid bleach as much as possible. Bleach will kill the natural bacteria your septic tank needs to function properly. Never put any kind of grease or oil down your drains, when grease is hot it is in a liquid form but once it cools it becomes solid and can clog the pipes in your house, your sewer pipe, and weeping bed pipes.
Grease or oil pertains to but not limited to bacon grease, grease from frying ground meats, grease from roasts, olive oil, canola oil, vegetable oil, coconut oil, butter, etc. It is best practice to wipe grease or oil out of your pots and pans with a paper towel before washing them and dispose of the paper towel in the garbage or compost. This helps to prevent any unnecessary grease or oil build up in your plumbing.

Septic tank risers are a system that is added to the septic tank so that you don’t have to dig your tank lids up before every service. The most common riser configuration is the green plastic style. But there are also concrete style risers. Risers have many benefits, they are less work for the homeowner most notably because you don’t have to dig them up prior to servicing the tank, and the caps are plastic which makes accessing the tank easier as they are a lot less heavy than traditional concrete tank lids.

A septic system’s lifespan is 25 years. With routine care and maintenance, there is no reason why your septic system shouldn’t last many years past that. The weeping bed and outlet baffle are the first two parts of the septic system to need repair/replacement on average.

It is never a good idea to build anything over your septic tank, especially a deck. For one, it is against the Ontario Building Code. And two, our operators need to have full and open access to the septic tank openings in order to pump the tank out properly. We use 15’ long hydro spoons during your pump out to get all of the sludge from the tank, we cannot use these spoons if there is a deck in the way, which means you are not getting as thorough of a job. Further to that, working in confined areas such as under decks is considered confined space and can add an additional cost to your routine pump out.

An effluent filter is a part of the interior of your septic tank that is installed on the outlet (the pipe that connects your tank to your weeping bed). The effluent filter stops light solids from exiting the tank and entering the weeping bed. When light solids enter the weeping bed they will settle in the runs and over time, can clog the weeping bed. A clogged weeping bed is costly to repair or replace.
-
It is recommended to clean your effluent filter at minimum once a year. However, we recommend cleaning it twice a year. Once in the fall as you’re cleaning your property up for winter, and once again in the spring when you’re preparing your property for summer.

Using 2-ply toilet paper is safe for septic systems. We highly recommend staying away from brands advertising “stronger and thicker” toilet paper, even if it is 2 ply. This is because the thicker and stronger the toilet paper the less likely it will break down in the septic tank. Using toilet paper that is too thick can cause your septic tank to require service faster then it should and makes it more time consuming to pump, resulting in extra fees and potential plumbing issues.
